Ponomarev has been recalled from the Chicago Wolves (AHL).

Ponomarev is Carolina's 2020 second-round pick (53rd overall) and has earned his first NHL call up Friday after scoring six goals and 20 points in 20 games with the Chicago Wolves (AHL) to start 2023-24. The 21-year-old has a high potential to make his first NHL appearance Friday as the Hurricanes take on Washington on the road.

Ryan Shea has been recalled from Wilkes-Barre/Scranton (AHL).

Shea has appeared in 22 games this season but has yet to pick up a point while collecting 13 SOG, six PIMs and a -2 plus/minus. He was reassigned to the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton (AHL) on Tuesday but immediately recalled on Wednesday after John Ludvig (undisclosed) was placed on IR.

Rust will return to the Penguins' lineup for Tuesday's game against the Capitals after missing the last ten games due to an upper-body injury he suffered on December 6th. Before his injury, Rust was having a terrific season, scoring 20 points (10G / 10A) in 22 games. He will skate alongside Reilly Smith and Evgeni Malkin on the Penguins' second line tonight.

Rust's return to the ice and full participation in line rushes is an encouraging sign for the Penguins, with all signs pointing to his return on Tuesday night. Stuart Skinner will start Tuesday vs. Philadelphia.

After losing three straight games, the Oilers have won five in a row, three courtesy of Skinner, who will return to the crease on Tuesday. Skinner has saved 82 of 87 shots (.943 SV%) during his three-game winning streak and has been terrific dating back to late November, posting a .920 SV% in 12 games (10-2-0). The Oilers are -175 home favourites in a favourable matchup against a Philadelphia Flyers team that has lost two straight but defeated the Oilers 4-1 in their only other matchup this season.

Skinner will return to the crease for the Oilers in their first game back from the Christmas break in a favourable matchup against the San Jose Sharks. The Oilers, winners of two straight, are enormous -403 road favourites against a Sharks that has lost six straight (0-6-0), including a 5-1 loss last night at the hands of the Los Angeles Kings. Skinner has had an up-and-down last couple of weeks but is coming off an impressive 31-save performance (.912 SV%) in his most recent outing, a 4-3 victory over the New York Rangers.

Girard returned to practice, skating as an extra, for the first time after entering the players' assistance program nearly one month ago. Girard has played 15 games this season, scoring one point (0G / 1A) in his first 13 before tripling that with three points (2G / 1A) in his last two games. During Girard's absence, Josh Manson has seen a significant uptick in usage and production.

Stuart Skinner will start Friday vs. the New York Rangers.

The Oilers snapped a three-game skid on Thursday with a 6-3 win over the New Jersey Devils courtesy of a strong performance from Calvin Pickard but will turn back to Skinner on the back end of a back-to-back on Friday. Skinner has lost two consecutive starts, allowing eight goals on 43 combined shots (.814 SV%), but had won his previous seven, boasting a tremendous .934 SV%. The Oilers are slight +107 road underdogs against an Eastern Conference powerhouse in the New York Rangers, who have won three straight, outscoring their opposition 12-4, and will likely turn to Jonathan Quick between the pipes.
