Is Jordan Binnington a good fit for the Canadiens?

St. Louis Blues goaltender Jordan Binnington upped his stock while representing Canada’s men’s hockey team at the 2026 Winter Olympics. Despite the silver-medal finish, Binnington performed well for the Canadians, posting a .917 save percentage (SV%) and 1.78 goals against average (GAA) in five games.
Now with the NHL’s regular season back in full force, some are wondering if Binnington, who ranked at or near the bottom of every goaltending category through the first three quarters of the season, improved his value ahead of the March 6 Trade Deadline.
One team who may be interested is the Montreal Canadiens, who have gotten less than stellar goaltending from the likes of Sam Montembeault and Jakub Dobes, each of which have posted a save percentage below .900. Would the Canadiens, who are trying to clinch a playoff berth for the second consecutive season, be interested in a rejuvenated Binnington?
On Tuesday’s episode of Daily Faceoff LIVE, Tyler Yaremchuk and former NHL goaltender Carter Hutton discuss Binnington’s Olympic performance and where he may be a fit going forward.
Carter Hutton: I think about Montreal and how they really haven’t gotten any consistent goaltending this year, so maybe they would kick tires on Jordan Binnington.
If I’m Blues GM Doug Armstrong and I’m looking at my team and where they’re at, and they’re clearly not making the playoffs, maybe it’s time to sell off a few pieces, and maybe Binnington is attached because his stock won’t be any higher than it is right now.
Tyler Yaremchuk: Binnington was linked to the Edmonton Oilers earlier in the season, but they made their move with Tristan Jarry and Connor Ingram. But you mentioned the Canadiens as a potential fit. He’s a big-game netminder, there’s reason to believe the Blues would be open to trading him.
If you were the Habs and you did some sort of a Montembeault-plus-draft pick, maybe it’s a first- or second-round pick, I think that’s a match made in heaven. You would have him playing with Jakub Dobes, and Binnington has one more year on his deal after this one. You get him for this playoff run and one more next year, maybe he’s splitting with Jacob Fowler.
