A nice little deal for one of the San Jose Sharks‘ top veterans.

On Sunday, the team announced that forward Alexander Wennberg has signed a three-year contract extension. The deal, which kicks in next season, carries an AAV of $6 million through the 2028-29 campaign.

It’s a slight pay bump from Wennberg’s current contract. He’s in the final season of his two-year contract that he signed in July 2024. That deal has a cap hit of $5 million, with a modified no-trade clause.

The new contract adds to a pretty exciting week for the 31-year-old. This past Friday, he was named to Sweden’s men’s roster for the 2026 Winter Olympics.

Wennberg has been having a solid season for a much-improved Sharks team. In 41 games, the center has scored seven goals and 19 assists for 26 points, currently tied for third on the team in scoring, trailing youngsters Macklin Celebrini and Will Smith.

The Stockholm native is on pace to eclipse the point total from his first season in San Jose, where he posted 10 goals and 25 assists for 35 points.

The extension gives Wennberg a presumably stable home for the next couple of years, something he hasn’t had since he played the first six years of his NHL career with the Columbus Blue Jackets. Since 2020, he has played for the Florida Panthers, Seattle Kraken and New York Rangers.

In 830 NHL regular-season games, Wennberg has scored 108 goals and 288 assists for 396 points. He’s also notched 19 points in 56 Stanley Cup Playoff contests.

The Sharks (20-18-3) are sixth in the Pacific Division, just outside of the last Wild Card spot in the Western Conference. They will play host to the Blue Jackets on Tuesday night.
