A young blueliner is back on the shelf for a considerable amount of time.

On Tuesday, Pittsburgh Penguins general manager Kyle Dubas announced that defenseman Jack St. Ivany underwent surgery on his left hand, with his recovery time expected to take up to eight weeks.

According to the team, the successful operation was performed at UPMC Mercy Hospital by Dr. John Fowler in collaboration with head team physician Dr. Dharmesh Vyas.

St. Ivany hurt his hand in the first period of the Penguins’ 3-2 win over the Vancouver Canucks on Sunday. He registered less than three minutes of ice time across three shifts.

It comes after what has been a solid stretch of games for the 26-year-old. He had posted a pair of assists in each of Pittsburgh’s first two games of the Western Canadian road trip, as the team picked up victories over the Calgary Flames and Edmonton Oilers.

St. Ivany has been limited to just 17 games so far this season, thanks to a lower-body injury he suffered during the preseason,. He was held out of action until late November, when he was sent to the Penguins’ American Hockey League affiliate, the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins, on a conditioning stint. He would make his season debut with Pittsburgh on Dec. 16 against the Oilers.

The Manhattan Beach, Calif. native has posted seven assists thus far, with a plus/minus of +7 while averaging 15:39 of ice time.

In 50 career games with the Pens, St. Ivany has yet to score a goal, but has nine assists to his name.

The Penguins (26-14-11) currently sit second in the Metropolitan Division, six points back of the Carolina Hurricanes for first place.
