The roof at Xfinity Mobile Arena on Wednesday night was barely hanging on, and a lot of people had the chance to hang on to some history.

In Game 6 of the Metropolitan Division Semifinal against the Pittsburgh Penguins, Philadelphia Flyers defenseman Cam York scored the game-winning goal in overtime, giving the Flyers their first series win since 2020.

When celebrating the goal, York let his emotions take over, hurling his stick into the crowd before celebrating with the rest of his teammates.

When speaking to the media after the game, York admitted that he didn’t realize what had happened until well after he scored and that he hopes his actions didn’t hurt anyone.

“I hope everyone is okay in the stands,” York said. “Definitely don’t want a lawsuit. Just, honestly, blacked out. I didn’t know what to do. I was so excited. Just so happy for my teammates and obviously the fans.”

The goal will be memorable not only for the team and its fanbase, but for York himself. It was the former Michigan Wolverine’s first-ever goal in the Stanley Cup Playoffs, and his first goal overall since Jan. 21. In his young NHL career, York hasn’t been known as an offensive star, with his career-high 10 goals coming during the 2023-24 campaign. This year, the 25-year-old found the back of the net just four times.

York ends the first round with a goal and an assist, as he posted a helper in the Flyers’ loss in Game 4 last week. He had a plus/minus of +1 while averaging just under 23 minutes of ice time.

Now, the Flyers have the pleasure of going up against the top seed in the Eastern Conference, the Carolina Hurricanes, in the Metro Division Semifinal. The start date for the series has yet to be announced.
