The Toronto Maple Leafs announced on Monday that forward Max Domi will be out indefinitely due to complications arising from an offseason surgery.

According to a statement released by the team, Domi had been undergoing surgery to address an issue he had been playing through during the 2025-26 season. However, due to complications arising from the surgery, it has put Domi out indefinitely.

Beyond the information provided in the statement, the Leafs didn’t provide any details on what kind of injury Domi was taking care of with the surgery, what complication occurred from the surgery, or when Domi is expected to be back from the injury, aside from the fact that he will be re-evaluated by the team at the start of training camp.

Domi didn’t miss any games to injury during the 2025-26 season, or at least not officially. He did miss a single game on two occasions in November and December, but that was as a healthy scratch. Beyond that, any injury on Domi’s end was not known this season.

Domi is coming off another down year with the Toronto Maple Leafs, where he had 12 goals and 24 assists for 36 points in 80 games. It was his second season in a row where he failed to hit the 40-point mark, only the fourth time in his 11-season career where he did not do so.

Domi’s disappointing offensive results were only magnified by his significant struggles defensively, as he had a 0.178 5v5 regularized adjusted plus-minus expected goals against per 60 (via Evolving Hockey), the 24th-worst rate in the league. He’s never been known for his defensive play, but it certainly contributed to the Leafs’ struggles this year, especially when it limited where he could be placed in the lineup.

Domi will be entering the third year of a four-year contract with a $3.75 million cap hit this upcoming season.
