Patrick Kane ties NHL record for most points by American-born player

One of the best players in hockey history has equaled a significant milestone.
On Tuesday night, Detroit Red Wings forward Patrick Kane tied Mike Modano’s record for the most points by an American-born player in NHL history, posting the 1,374th point of his illustrious career.
The historic point came late in the third period of the Red Wings’ matchup with the Los Angeles Kings. Kane set up longtime teammate Alex DeBrincat for a goal to cut the deficit to 2-1.

Detroit would still end up losing, 3-1.
Kane reached the mark in the 1,341st game of his NHL career, faster than Mike Modano, who just happened to finish his playing days with Detroit 15 years ago. Modano’s final point of his career came in his 1,495th game.
While Modano has held the record for well over a decade, there’s no question that Kane will go down as the best American-born player in the game’s history. On top of averaging over a point-per-game throughout his entire career, he has reached heights that few players from his country have.
The Buffalo native burst onto the scene during the 2007-08 season after he was taken first overall by the Chicago Blackhawks. Along with winning the Calder Trophy, Kane led the Hawks to three Stanley Cups, winning the Conn Smythe Trophy in 2013. The 2015-16 campaign was Kane’s best individual campaign. He set career highs in goals (46) and points (106), winning the Art Ross Trophy, Ted Lindsay Award and Hart Trophy.
The 37-year-old also scored the 500th goal of his NHL career earlier this month, becoming just the fourth American-born player to reach the milestone.
Kane will have a chance to surpass Modano on Thursday night, when the Red Wings host the Washington Capitals.
