Calgary Flames forward Jonathan Huberdeau will miss the remainder of the 2025-26 season after undergoing hip resurfacing surgery.

Huberdeau, 32, scored the opening goal in Calgary’s 4-3 victory over the Edmonton Oilers on Wednesday evening. In 50 games with the Flames this season, the 6’1″ winger recorded 10 goals and 25 points.

With the Flames now inactive for three weeks during the 2026 Winter Olympics and sitting well outside the playoff picture in the Western Conference, Huberdeau will begin a recovery process to address an issue that has reportedly impacted him throughout the season, which has been one of his least productive in the NHL to date.

Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman was the first to report the news of Huberdeau needing surgery on Thursday. The Flames subsequently confirmed the report and specified that Huberdeau will undergo a hip resurfacing procedure in March; he is expected to make a full recovery in time for the start of the 2026-27 season.

Huberdeau is three seasons into the eight-year, $10.5 million-AAV contract he signed with the Flames as a pending unrestricted free agent in 2022. The Flames acquired Huberdeau from the Florida Panthers that year as part of the blockbuster Matthew Tkachuk trade, which also saw MacKenzie Weegar, Cole Schwindt, and a 2025 first-round pick (Cullen Potter) head to Calgary.

Despite scoring 115 points in his final year with the Panthers, Huberdeau has never reached those heights since joining the Flames. He had his best year with the club in the 2024-25 season, racking up 28 goals and 62 points over 81 games; however, the Flames have never reached the playoffs in the four years since Huberdeau arrived.

The Panthers originally selected Huberdeau with the No. 3 overall pick in the 2011 NHL Draft. The Saint-Jerome, Quebec product spent 10 seasons with the Panthers to begin his career, establishing new franchise records in virtually every offensive category. Despite this, the Panthers have only experienced consistent playoff success since trading Huberdeau, reaching three consecutive Stanley Cup Finals and winning the last two.

In 962 career NHL games over 14 seasons with the Panthers and Flames, Huberdeau has collected 263 goals and 807 points. He’s added five goals and 21 points in 26 career playoff contests with Florida.

After defeating the Oilers on Wednesday, the Flames currently sit in 29th place in the NHL standings with a 23-27-6 record and 52 points through 56 games. They’ll return to action on Feb. 26 against the San Jose Sharks to kick off a three-game California road swing.
