The NHL DoPS cited the recklessness of Beecher’s action as the reason for the suspension, but his lack of previous history with no fines or suspensions on his record was why the suspension only came to one game.
The incident in question occurred late in the first period of the Flames’ 4-3 loss to the Predators. As a scrum broke out between several Calgary and Nashville players, Beecher and McCarron were paired up. As the officials were trying to end the shenanigans, Beecher sucker-punched McCarron, with McCarron falling to the ice.
Whoa. John Beecher sucker punches Michael McCarron while the officials are ending things. That's pretty uncalled for.
Beecher and McCarron received identical two-minute minor penalties for roughing and 10-minute misconducts, with Beecher receiving no additional penalties for the sucker punch at the time.
Beecher did later have to answer for his sucker punch, as Nic Hague fought the Elmira, New York product midway through the second period, with the Predators defenseman winning the matchup quite handedly. Beecher appeared to hurt something in his left arm in the fight, although there’s been no further update from the team.

Beecher began the season as a member of the Boston Bruins, entering what was his third season with the team. He played six games with Boston, scoring one goal in that span, before he was placed on waivers in mid-November. The Flames claimed him, and he’s since played 19 games in Calgary, getting two assists in that timeframe.
The Flames currently sit in seventh in the Pacific Division with an 18-19-4 record, and are three points behind the Los Angeles Kings for the final wild card spot in the Western Conference. Calgary will look to bounce back from their loss to the Predators when they conclude their five-game homestand against the Seattle Kraken on Monday at 7:30 p.m. MST.
